Security issues to end library service at Raleigh high school
RALEIGH (WTVD) -- When it began in the 1980s, a plan to have a public library inside Athens Drive High School was considered a win-win to provide both students and the general public with access to reading material in one place.
That was before a series of tragic school shootings across the country that has left school districts hyper-focused on campus safety issues.
Thursday, the Wake County Public School System and Wake County jointly announced the Athens Drive public library just presents too many security challenges, and it will be closed as of July 25.
The library will remain open to students, staff, and their guests during school hours when the new school year begins in August.
The county is shifting its public library services to nearby full-service libraries such as Cary, Cameron Village and Eva Perry.
