Durham police investigating violent home invasion

DURHAM (WTVD) -- A violent home invasion is under investigation in Durham after a person was shot several times overnight and the gunmen remain on the loose.

It happened just before midnight Sunday on Carter Avenue, off Angier Avenue.

Investigators said a man was shot twice in the side after he may have arrived home to a robbery in progress.

It was unclear if there was some sort of struggle before the shooting, but the suspects did take a safe from the house before fleeing the scene.

The victim's mother told ABC11 her son is in the hospital recovering, and is expected to be okay.

Police are currently searching for three men in connection with the crime. Authorities have not released any other details surrounding the incident.
