CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (WTVD) -- The U.S. Attorney's Office in the Middle District of North Carolina said Wednesday the FBI has handed over its investigation into the shooting deaths of three Chapel Hill students earlier this year.

The USAO says it's now reviewing the FBI's report and will make a decision on whether to seek federal hate crime charges against the alleged shooter, Craig Hicks.

Hicks is accused of shooting Deah Barakat, Yusor Abu-Salha and Razan Abu-Salha, three Muslim UNC students on Feb. 10.

"The United States Attorney's Office for the Middle District of North Carolina and the Civil Rights Division of the U.S. Department of Justice are currently reviewing the FBI investigation into the deaths of Deah Barakat, Yusor Mohammad Abu-Salha and Razan Mohammad Abu-Salha. The Office will continue to work closely with the Durham County District Attorney's Office to determine to what extent there will be federal involvement in this matter."
