CUMBERLAND COUNTY, N.C. (WTVD) -- The men and women who saved an 8-year-old Hope Mills boy from his burning home got special honors Monday night.

Tavares Hollingsworth's mother, Shericka Creighton, hugged everyone who rescued her son.

"I can't thank them enough. They went above and beyond," said Creighton. "They weren't even supposed to go back in there. Thank God they went back and got my son."

Members of Pearce's Mill, Cumberland Road, and Cotton fire departments along with the Cape Fear Valley EMS were honored with "life safety" awards.

Creighton represented Tavares because he's still recovering from the fire.

The fire started in the family's home on Selma Drive on Dec. 20.

Tavares was burned over half of his body before firefighters could get him out of the house through a window.

Since then, he's been recovering at the North Carolina Jaycee Burn Center at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill where he's been undergoing physical therapy.

His foot was amputated after the fire.
