Workers want answers after vandals spray painted KKK on Durham businesses

DURHAM (WTVD) -- A prank or racially motivated? Upset workers want answers after vandals spray painted KKK on a Durham business over the weekend.

A viewer sent ABC11 photos of the damage at Stewart Physical Therapy.

It turns out, it was not the only business the vandals targeted over the weekend.

Across the street, vandals spray-painted profanity and other images on another business where patients - some of them elderly - come for medical visits.

"I definitely take caution because of the world we're living in today. I don't dismiss it," said an African American employee who asked not to be identified out of fear the vandalism was racially motivated.

A private security company that monitors one of the businesses told ABC11 that it isn't the first time vandals have targeted these offices, and said it seems to be getting worse.

Which is definitely unsettling to some of the workers at the businesses.

"There's a lot of racial tension I think in today's society," said one employee who asked not to be identified for fear the vandalism is racially motivated.

"I just can't be too careful, there are a lot of African Americans that work around here too. There's no telling if somebody just drove by and was upset or somebody just drove by and decided to be ignorant and prove a point. Better safe than sorry."

There's a chance the vandals were caught on surveillance camera. An independent security firm is reviewing the video and plans to hand it over to police.
