Local couple spends Thanksgiving in European city on high alert
RALEIGH (WTVD) -- A local couple is spending this Thanksgiving thousands of miles away in a European city on high alert as investigators continue searching for two men tied to the Paris attacks.
Julian Gamble and L'Oreal Price have been living and working in Brussels, Belgium since September.
After a four-day, city-wide lockdown life is slowly getting back to normal.
"There is security and military in this area to protect us just in case," said Price. "We have been told to stay away from the windows and stay away from the main attraction areas."
Price, a 2010 Fayetteville State University CIAA champion, coaches the women's basketball team at the University of Brussels.
Gamble, a 2013 ACC basketball champion for the Miami Hurricanes, is playing professionally in Belgium.
"When we enter our gym and go to practice they check everyone's bags. You can only enter and exit out of a certain place, so they're being very, very careful," he said.
"They're trying to reassure us that they're okay," said Leslie Price, L'Oreal's mother. "Thank God for technology. We're able to communicate regularly,"
In the midst of Europe's unrest, the couple hosted a Thanksgiving dinner for their friends and teammates in Belgium.
The pair say have a lot to be thankful for.
They are expecting their first child in May and planning a wedding in Raleigh when they return.
As they Facetime with loved ones back home, their family finds peace in knowing they're together.
"It does comfort me to see they're safe and do it well," said Sarah Gamble, Julia's mother. "Just being able to see and talk to them makes all the difference in the world."
