RALEIGH (WTVD) -- One person was killed late Friday in a crash on I-540 westbound.
It happened around 11:15 p.m. near Triangle Town Boulevard.
Raleigh police say a table and a couch cushion came loose from a truck.
The driver, 35-year-old Jesus Lopez Gomez, and his passenger, 23-year-old Mayra Elizabeth Caceres Perez, went to pick up the furniture when another car came up behind them.
That driver -- 42-year-old Nathaniel Lautha Harris -- swerved to miss the furniture, but hit Gomez and Perez. He then began to flee on foot from the scene, but officers quickly caught up to him.
Perez was killed and Gomez was seriously hurt, but police say his injuries are not life-threatening.
"I can't imagine. It would be terrible. I feel it kind of makes me nervous," said Raleigh resident Kendra Chapman. "People aren't paying attention. I feel like you kind of see a person if you're really paying attention."
Harris was transported to the Wake County Detention Center, where he was charged with felony hit and run and driving while license revoked.
The incident remains under investigation. It is not yet known where the victims are from.
The westbound lanes were closed for about four hours overnight.
