Man charged in Smithfield double shooting

SMITHFIELD, NC (WTVD) -- A man is in custody following a double shooting in Smithfield early Sunday.

Around 1 a.m., police went to the Johnston Court Apartments on Kay Drive where they found two men with gunshot wounds. Both were taken to the hospital where they are listed in stable condition.

The Smithfield Police Department said 23-year-old Johnell Andrew Padgett is now charged with two counts of assault with a deadly weapon.

Bond was set at $100,000.

Detectives said they have not found a motive for the alleged attack.
