FAYETTEVILLE (WTVD) -- A man was taken into custody after a nearly four-hour long standoff at a Fayetteville apartment complex.

Fayetteville Police evacuated residents in the Adams Lake Apartment complex after the suspect barricaded himself inside one of the units.

Officers responded to a report of a domestic disturbance at one of the units on Attorney Drive just after 12 p.m. When authorities arrived, they learned a man had barricaded himself inside the home and was experiencing "mental distress."

Police said the suspect was visiting a friend at the complex when the disturbance occurred.

Lt. Todd Joyce told ABC11 that law enforcement believed the suspect had rigged an explosive device to the door, which could have detonated if officers entered the apartment.

Officers helped residents in the immediate area around the home evacuate. Residents in other parts of the complex were encouraged to remain inside their apartments until officers learned more about the situation.

The apartment was cleared after firefighters rescued the man with a ladder and transport board. Officers didn't find any explosive devices inside.

The suspect surrendered peacefully. He was taken to a local medical facility for mental evaluation.
