DURHAM (WTVD) -- A four-car accident sent at least five people to the hospital and blocked traffic for hours in Durham Wednesday.

Police said just after 4 p.m., one car hit another and didn't stop.

The driver then passed a stopped school bus and hit a van in a driveway. A woman standing near the van was hurt.

The driver of the car then continued and hit another car head-on and flipped over on top of it. The two ended up sandwiched together in one family's front yard.

It happened on Cornwallis Road between Roxboro and Charles Streets.

Jerome Tyler lives just down from the scene of the accident and saw what happened.

"He was trying to leave the scene, so it was one hit-and-run, plus another hit-and-run and then the actual accident," said Tyler, "Because he was trying to get away from the first wreck, then he hit the van, and was going to keep going, but when he got around it he didn't see the other car coming."

The extent of the injuries of those involved has not been released but Durham police confirm they are not life-threatening.

There's no word yet on who was involved or if anyone will face any charges.
