New details revealed about Cary terror suspect
ABC11 has learned new details about a Wake County man accused of trying to join a militant group in Syria.

RALEIGH (WTVD) -- What we've learned in recent months about terror groups in Syria is lending a new perspective to the case of a Cary man charged with supporting some of those groups.

When documents related to the investigation of Basit Sheikh were released late last year, the names of the terrorist organizations in those documents meant little to Americans.

However, we've learned a lot since then and now it appears that the groups the FBI claims Sheikh was connected to could be related to the now-infamous "ISIS."

That's the Syrian terror group now known for its beheading of two American journalists.

ISIS is said to have members from the U.S. and Western Europe, most notably the English executioner.

According to federal documents in the Sheikh case, he was trying to return to Syria to fight for the al-Nusrah Front, an alias for al-Qaida in Iraq.

Some believe that now defeated organization morphed into ISIS.

Nonetheless, a terrorism expert at Duke University tells ABC11 it's not that simple.

"I think some of this just shows how messy and complicated the situation is in Syria and how those who are calling for, you know, simple solutions are not really grappling with the complexity of the issues," said David Schanzer and associate professor at Duke's School of Public Policy.
