Parents of NC student with gun in backpack charged

SURRY COUNTY, N.C. -- Police have charged the parents of the Surry County student who carried a gun onto a school bus in a backpack.

Catherine Louise Moore, 27, and Nicolas Vazques, 34, were each charged with failure to store a firearm to protect a minor. The child has been referred to juvenile services.

The principal of Cedar Ridge Elementary School received information that the student had a handgun in a backpack.

After investigating, school officials found and confiscated a .22 caliber handgun. The gun was not loaded and the student did not have bullets.
