Lumberton police, IRS warn of widespread tax scam
LUMBERTON, N.C. -- Lumberton police are warning residents of a scam in which a person calls claiming to be from the Internal Revenue Service and demands money.
Police Capt. Terry Parker tells news outlets that his department and the Robeson County Sheriff's Office have received numerous reports from residents about people posing as IRS officials demanding money.
The Fayetteville Observer (http://bit.ly/1TElH1L) reports residents of Fayetteville, Cumberland and surrounding counties have also swamped lawmen this week with hundreds of reports about these calls.
Authorities say the scammers sometimes threaten to arrest, deport or revoke the license of the victim unless the phony bill is paid.
IRS spokesman Luis Garcia says the scammers may be currently targeting people who have a 910 area code.
Garcia says the IRS never demands immediate payment or issues threats.
