Fallen tree causes power outages in Orange and Durham Counties

A fallen tree is causing power outtages

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (WTVD) -- A tree fell down on Old Durham Road in Chapel Hill and is causing power outages and road closures.

Police said it happened around 1 a.m. Tuesday and knocked down power lines, causing the outages in the immediate area.

Duke Energy said that three poles were damaged and need to be replaced.

Close to 700 people are without power.

All lanes have been blocked to drivers from Pope Road to East Lakeview Drive.

Utility crews are working to remove the lines from the roadway and restore power.

Authorities said it could be restored by 4 p.m.

Duke Energy spokesman Jeff Brooks released this statement:

Our crews are working to restore service as safely and quickly as possible, but we want our customers to understand that this restoration could take well into the afternoon to complete. Customers affected by this outage are encouraged to check our online outage map for updates, and also to report the outage to our outage reporting line at 800-POWERON (769-3766). There is an option to receive a call back when power is restored.
