Raleigh cutting pool hours because of lifeguard shortage
RALEIGH -- Raleigh officials say a lifeguard shortage has forced them to cut pool hours and limit access to some pool areas as swimming season begins.
The News & Observer of Raleigh reports the city needs 50 more lifeguards to keep its pools running at full capacity this summer. Raleigh aquatics director Terri Stroupe says the city hasn't been able to attract as many teenagers to be lifeguards, despite recruitment efforts.
The shortage has led each of the city's nine pools to close earlier than usual, cancel after-hours rentals or limit access to wading pools and diving areas.
Lifeguards must be 15 years old and Red Cross-certified. The city offers free classes to those who will work at least 155 hours during the summer.
A starting lifeguard makes $8.25 an hour.
