Woman and child injured after school bus crash
Authorities said it happened on Horton Road in Wake County

KNIGHTDALE, NC (WTVD) -- A woman and her child were hurt in a crash with a school bus near Knightdale Wednesday morning.

The bus operated by Gracie Jean Jones, 64, of Wendell, was traveling south on Horton Road around 9:23 a.m. when it was struck head-on by a 2000 Nissan passenger vehicle, operated by Courtney Michelle Cates, 34, of Raleigh.

Lisa Luten with Wake County Public School System told ABC11 there were no children on board.

Cates and her 4-year-old son were taken to WakeMed with serious but non-life threatening injuries. Jones was treated for minor injuries at the scene.

Cates was charged with DWI, driving left of center, and misdemeanor child abuse.

Another driver, 41-year-old Shawn Kenyaris Malloy, tried to avoid the collision and crashed into a highway sign on Horton Road. He was not injured.
