JORDAN LAKE (WTVD) -- The search for a missing fisherman at Jordan Lake is now a recovery operation, according to North Chatham Fire Rescue.

An unidentified 81-year-old man was reported missing around 10:10 a.m. Wednesday. Rescue teams equipped with sonar devices made several unsuccessful attempts to locate the missing man.

Chatham County authorities said they got a call for help after a boat operator witnessed his friend fall overboard.

According the North Carolina Wildlife Commission, three men were fishing on a 20-foot boat. The unidentified 81-year-old man was sitting on a platform on the rear side of the boat before he fell into the lake in the Farrington Point area.

"Where he fell it's shallow," explained Wildlife Officer Claud Smith. "There could be tree roots and stones causing more of a problem than the current."

The search was suspended at sunset. Authorities were not releasing the man's name until they could notify his family.

His friends remained at the scene observing the search. They confirmed the missing fisherman is from Chapel Hill.
