DURHAM COUNTY (WTVD) -- Two people are hurt following an early-morning house fire in northern Durham County.

The blaze was reported just after 4 a.m. near the intersection of Sandalwood Drive and Roxboro Road (US-501 North).

Family friends told ABC11 that 80-year-old Margaret Spruill - affectionately called "Peggy" - is fighting for her life at The UNC burn center. She suffered severe burns and smoke inhalation.

Her son John - who uses a wheelchair - was also hospitalized but is expected to recover.

At last report, UNC Hospitals said the mother and son were both listed in critical condition.

Firefighters say the fire started in the kitchen, but they don't know exactly what caused it yet.
