CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- The University of North Carolina is warning students and employees of separate Internet scams.
The News & Observer of Raleigh reports the school's Alert Carolina system says the FBI is aware of a student-focused scam that offers work-from-home jobs in payroll or human resources while getting students to give up bank-account information. Scammers reach students through their school email accounts.
Another scam targets workers through university email accounts and says there has been an unspecified change in the employee's status with the school's human resources office. That email offers what looks like a legitimate HR log-in, but it is actually a phony way to get access to the employee's login information so pay can be directed to the scammers' bank account instead of the employee's.
