Vigil honors 7-year-old hit by bullets while he was sleeping
A group gathered on the courthouse steps in Wilson for 7-year-old Kamari Jones.

WILSON, N.C. (WTVD) -- A vigil Sunday evening honored a 7-year-old child in Wilson who was hit by bullets while he was sleeping.

A group gathered on the steps of the courthouse in Wilson for Kamari Jones.

The little boy was shot when someone fired a gun into a home in the 400 block of Parkview Street just before 10 p.m. Wednesday.

He was a student at Margaret Hearne Elementary School in Wilson.

"We are deeply saddened by the loss of one of our students, and he will be truly missed by his classmates and the staff at Hearne Elementary," said Amber Lynch, the school's director of public relations, in a statement. "We want to do everything we can to support the family during this difficult time."

The school is accepting donations to help Kamari's family with expenses. Checks can be made to Hearne Elementary School with "Kamari Jones" in the memo line.

So far, no arrests have been made in the case.
