Water main break causes mess in Durham

DURHAM (WTVD) -- Authorities in Durham are dealing with a mess after a huge water main break in the east side of the city Wednesday morning.

It happened around 5:30 a.m. on East Geer Street, between Essex Road and Hardee Street.

Due to the cold temperatures, some of the water is freezing. The road is currently closed, and motorists are advised to take Cheek Road as an alternate route.

Nine businesses are reportedly without water around Geer Street.

Freezing temperatures in the winter increase the possibility of main breaks, which could have caused the break.

It is unclear when the main will be repaired.
