Woman in critical condition after trying to help a dog hit by car in Durham

DURHAM (WTVD) -- A man and a woman trying to help the man's dog that was hit by a car in Durham Monday night were themselves hit.

It happened around 8:30 p.m. in the 1500 block of Liberty Street near North Guthrie Avenue.

After the dog was hit, 47-year-old Jonathan Parker tried to help and flagged down 29-year-old Stephanie Wilson to help him. That's when all three were hit by an SUV.

Wilson was taken to the hospital with critical injuries and Parker was taken to the hospital for treatment of injuries that do not appear to be life-threatening. The dog died as a result of its injuries.

The driver of the SUV, 54-year-old Margarita Hernandez De La Cruz, was not injured.

Officers cited De La Cruz for driving while her license was revoked and not having insurance on her vehicle. The accident remains under investigation.

Because De La Cruz had no insurance, Wilson's friends say she will be responsible for her own medical bills, which are expected to be significant.
