It happened just before 4 p.m. on Highway 50 at Reedy Prong Church Road.

State troopers said a 2002 Ford Explorer driven by Tammy Higgins Johnson, 47 of Newton Grove, was traveling south on Highway 50 when her SUV went off the roadway to the right, then crossed the centerline to the left.

Troopers said she overcorrected and ran off the road to the right, hitting a ditch culvert and then striking a tree.

Johnson died at the scene, troopers said.

Three passengers in the vehicle were treated at the scene by EMS and later released: 25-year-old Tiffany Bradley, who was in the front passenger seat, and two children, ages 5 and 1, who were in the back seat. Troopers did not immediately know the relationships between the occupants of the SUV other than that Johnson was the grandmother of the 1-year-old boy.

Highway 50 reopened shortly after 6 p.m. between Reedy Prong Church Road and Godwin Lake Road.
