RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) -- An officer opened fire on a carjacking suspect in Raleigh early Saturday morning.

It all began just before 8 a.m. when a woman called police about a man trying to break into her car.

The woman said the suspect, later identified at Najae Devonte Riley, even pointed a gun at her as she watched him through a window in her home on Creech Road.

Riley then ran off and tried to carjack a Solid Waste Services truck. He ordered two employees out of the truck at gunpoint, overtook the vehicle, then ordered one employee back into the vehicle.

Officials said Riley was unable to actually drive the trash truck, so he ran off.

Officers arrived about this time and Riley pointed a gun at them. Officers said Riley threw an item, which was later identified as a cellphone, to the ground and ran off toward Southeast Raleigh High School.

Officials said additional officers arrived, locating Riley and demanding him to get to the ground. He refused. Officers said he then put his hands forward as if he had a gun; one officer responded by opening fire.

The officer fired multiple shots, but none of them hit Riley.

Police then took Riley into custody without further incident.

Investigators said they found a gun at the attempted carjacking location, but they did not say Riley had a gun on him when the officer shot at him.
