A Durham man worried about his family and their animal rescue group is working to get them all out of Israel.

Jeffrey Johnson moved to Israel in 2014, but has returned and says the settlement where they were living near the Syrian border is too precarious.

The family's Shalom Animal Rescue has 57 cats and dogs they want to move to North Carolina.

"Obviously, you can't shelter all the animals because we have one single bomb shelter in our home. And it's gotten to the point when she called me the other night I said you know we been thinking about this, I move back here in August because we knew the conflict was getting more and more sustained, you just don't know which way the Middle East is going right now," said Johnson.

Johnson says it'll cost as much as $30,000 to airlift the animals to the U.S.
