CLAYTON (WTVD) -- A kitten trapped in a deep storm drain Monday was rescued after a 4-year-old boy heard the animal's faint cries.

Sara Tolley told authorities in Clayton that she was walking her son, Camden, to pre-school when he heard what sounded like a kitten in front of Hocutt-Ellington Memorial Library.

After animal control and the fire department arrived at the scene and took off the drain covers, fighters went down two openings to find the animal.

Both worked to coax the kitten out and retrieve it.

Authorities said the kitten's paws were rubbed raw from its attempts to climb out of the drain.

With Monday's rain, officials said they knew the drain would have soon been flooded with water and were happy they were able to rescue the animal with Camden's help.

Authorities are currently working to find a home for the kitten.
