Woman says she needs health care through expanded Medicaid

RALEIGH (WTVD) -- Organizers of the Moral Monday protests at the North Carolina General Assembly say they'll return next week.

On Friday, the group laid out their plans for Monday. They're planning another protest focused on healthcare and environmental issues.

This week, protesters were arrested around 2 a.m. Wednesday morning after staging a sit in at House Speaker Tom Tillis's office.

They wanted to meet with him but never got that meeting. The moral Monday protesters claim Republican lawmakers are hurting North Carolinians by refusing to expand Medicaid. They also want more unemployment benefits and more money for schools and teachers. One of the protesters arrested spoke Friday - saying she needs her health care and can't get it because of lawmakers.

"I need Medicaid. I'm currently not receiving it. I'm on disability and I am today struggling to eat, to buy my medication, to pay my light bill. What decisions do I have? Rob Peter to pay Paul," explained Rubye Harris.

The NAACP says their protest will also focus on more environmental regulations in light of the coal ash spill in the Dan River.
