'No calls while driving' bill proposed in North Carolina

Raleigh (WTVD) -- As North Carolina lawmakers return to General Assembly Thursday morning, they will discuss a bill that would ban drivers from making calls.

The bill is expected to be introduced this month and comes on the heels of a fatal accident where police said the victim was using her phone while driving.

Authorities said 32-year-old Courtney Stanford was killed in the Triad area last week. Shortly before the accident, police said Stanford was posting on Facebook about a song that made her happy.

Currently, texting and driving is illegal. However, the proposed bill could ban everyone from picking up their phone on the road - and only hands-free devices would be permitted.

The bill is named after a Charlotte teenager who police have said they believed was distracted when he pulled out in front of a pickup truck.
