Squirrel causes Durham power outage
Crews repair the damage

DURHAM (WTVD) -- Around 3:30 Thursday morning a squirrel in southwest Durham caused power lines to short circuit.

Squirrels, those cute and furry but horribly destructive little creatures, love to use power lines as their personal highways. They cause more than half of all power outages in the United States.

According to Duke Energy's website, at the peak of the outage, over 3,800 customers were completely in the dark.
