RDU opens 2 new TSA checkpoints in Terminal 2
MORRISVILLE, N.C. (WTVD) -- To help combat the growth of passengers traveling through Raleigh-Durham International Airport, officials have opened two more TSA checkpoints.
The new lanes are in Terminal 2. The airport now has 12 security checkpoints.

Officials said passenger volume increased by 6.2% in April -- 571,694 passengers boarded flights at RDU that month alone.
To further curb airport traffic, Frontier, Spirit and Allegiance airlines will be moved to Terminal 1 by 2020.
"We're going to take them and put them over in Terminal 1, which has additional capacity to again reduce some of the congestion we have at Terminal 2, (to) provide a better experience so our customers can get through security quicker," said Michael Landguth, president and CEO of the Raleigh-Durham Airport Authority. "The addition of the new checkpoint lanes will help RDU keep pace with tremendous growth and keep wait times down during the busy summer travel months. We also encourage travelers to register for TSA Precheck to make your wait times even shorter."
Currently, 95% of RDU passengers wait less than 30 minutes at security checkpoints, and 84% wait less than 15.
The hope is that the new lines will cut those wait times even more.
Officials report 12.8 million passengers flew through RDU in 2018.
Within the last few years, RDU has added new flights, renovated its parking deck and increased parking rates.
In March, the Board of Directors voted unanimously to lease Wake Stone Corporation land to expand an existing rock quarry.
RDU Airport Authority estimated the lease to Wake Stone Corporation will bring in $24 million over 35 years. In addition, the company must provide $3.6 million for a third party to lease 151 acres of airport land to create a mountain biking recreation area.
