Families mark the anniversary of the September 11 attacks

All around the Triangle and Central North Carolina Thursday, ceremonies and Day of Service events are being held in remembrance of Sept. 11, 2001.

The 9/11 Day of Service is a national and global initiative to mobilize volunteers to engage in good deeds and support causes as a way to honor those lost on that solemn day.

RALEIGH

Commemoration Ceremony

A 9/11 commemoration ceremony with live music and refreshments will be held Thursday in downtown Raleigh. Mayor Nancy McFarlane will be among the speakers at the commemoration ceremony.

Day of Service

For the 2014 9/11 Day of Service, volunteers will participate in nearly 60 service projects throughout Raleigh and the Triangle. 9/11 Day of Service community service projects address the needs of the community and range from blood donations, home improvements, beautifying public areas and schools, environmental protection, and more. First responders event

Wake Tech will mark September 11th with a tribute to the victims and heroes of that day, along with recognition of the first responders in our community who risk their lives every day. Public safety professionals will join college leaders and other members of the community on Thursday, September 11, at Wake Tech's Public Safety Education Campus. The event will include a special rose presentation at the Memorial Wall, a wreath-laying ceremony, and the release of doves. Following the tribute, guests will be able to tour the campus.

DURHAM

First responders breakfast

The Greater Durham Chamber of Commerce is holding its inaugural First Responders Award Breakfast at 9 a.m., with ABC11's Amber Rupinta as emcee. Fifteen departments and agencies will be honored at the event. Admission is $30 for individuals.

Day of Service

To commemorate September 11 in service, the Durham YMCA is partnering with other non-profits in the area to spend the day working on some Durham Habitat Job sites to help build some new homes for local families.

FAYETTEVILLE/FORT BRAGG

Fayetteville

- Free concert for first responders and veterans on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at NC Veterans Park

- Fayetteville Technical Community College's Student Government Association invites the public to participate in two 9/11 observance events at its Fayetteville campus located at 2201 Hull Road.

The first event is a 9/11 Observance Ceremony at 9 a.m. at the student gazebo near the Tony Rand Student Center.

The second event is a 9/11 Remembrance Concert at noon on the front lawn of the Tony Rand Student Center featuring the FORSCOM Army Ground Forces Ceremonial Band. Seating for 150 attendees will be provided for the hour-long concert, and guests are encouraged to bring a blanket and lunch to enjoy on the lawn.

Both events are free and open to the public. In case of inclement weather, the events will be held in the Horace Sisk Gymnasium.

Seymour Johnson Air Force Base

The 4th Fighter Wing will hold several memorial events Sept. 11 in honor of victims of the attacks in 2001.

The 9/11 Memorial Ceremony will take place at 8:20 a.m. at the base firehouse.

Immediately following the ceremony, the 9/11 memorial 24-hour run will begin. The run will continuously circle the 2-mile track around the Three Eagles Golf Course until 8:20 a.m., Sept. 12. Any interested personnel are welcome to join the run at any time.

Both events are open to all DOD card holders.

Fort Bragg

Fort Bragg will honor and pay respects to the first responders and civilians who died during the 2001 terrorist attacks with a 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. at Fort Bragg's Main Post Flag Pole Thursday. The event is open to the general public.

The ceremony will consist of a patriotic performance by members of the 82nd Airborne Division Chorus, a wreath laying, a 21-gun salute and Taps. In the event of inclement weather, the ceremony will take place at the Hercules Gym on Pope Field.

SPRING LAKE

The Town of Spring Lake will be holding a 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony on Thursday at Veteran's Park, located at the corner of Ruth and Main Streets in Spring Lake.

In the event of inclement weather, the ceremony will be moved to the Recreation Center located at 245 Ruth Street. The ceremony is open to the public.

Attendees are asked to gather in silence as the ceremony will begin promptly at 8:30 am. Light refreshments and fellowship will immediately follow.

GARNER

A 9/11 remembrance will be held at the Christian Life Center of First Baptist Church of Garner at 11:30 a.m. to recognize and honor emergency services personnel.

CARY

The Town of Cary is commemorating 9/11 with a Day of Community Service through the Town's Spruce program - a service project that benefits firefighters.

Cary will host two opportunities for volunteers to construct raised vegetable gardens on Thursday from 4-6 p.m. at Fire Station 1, 1501 N. Harrison Avenue and on Sept. 13 from 10 a.m.-noon at Fire Station 6, 3609 Ten-Ten Road. At each event, the Town of Cary will provide the tools and materials; volunteers only donate their time. All participants must be 15-years-old or be accompanied by an adult and must register.

ORANGE COUNTY

Orange County is encouraging the community to attend its 9/11 Memorial Ceremony.

The ceremony will take place at 8:30 a.m. on the front lawn of the Historic Courthouse in downtown Hillsborough.

The County is being joined by law enforcement and fire agencies from the towns of Hillsborough, Chapel Hill and Carrboro.
