FAYETTEVILLE (WTVD) -- Always patriotic, people in Fayetteville got a jump on Independence Day by celebrating America's birthday Tuesday evening.

Everyone was invited to Festival Park in downtown Fayetteville for food, games, music and fireworks. An estimated 20,000 residents packed the park.

The North Carolina Symphony played for about an hour before the fireworks show.

It was the sounds of freedom as military and civilian families sat side by side enjoying this grand show of colors.

"I thank a lot of our soldier for going out and sacrificing... what they do every day for us," said resident Melissa Cardenas. "The Fourth of July is what it means to me. God bless our USA, and the people who serve our country."

Last year, Fayetteville hosted Fourth of July celebrations after federal budget cuts canceled celebrations at Fort Bragg.

However, with the Fort Bragg party back on this year, city leaders decided to have their celebration a few days early so families could come watch the show Tuesday and go to the other Fourth of July celebration on Friday.
