Fayetteville teen recovering from brain surgery will attend prom Saturday
FAYETTEVILLE (WTVD) -- Medical complications from brain surgery left Victor Murray unable to speak, but the 18-year-old high school senior is about to have the prom date of his dreams.
Using sign language, Murray said Saturday night will be special -- being back with friends and classmates.
Murray was a member of the Cape Fear High School wrestling team when he was diagnosed with a brain tumor a year-and-a-half ago.
Since then, Victor has missed out on so much, but he has never given up.
"He's never had a negative attitude," said his adoptive mom, Laura Hottel. "He has never been angry to the point that he wouldn't try or he wouldn't care."
Neighbors and friends have joined Victor's fight to live. Yard signs dot neighborhood homes saying "praying and believing #teamvictor."
Family members said there was no way Victor was going to miss his senior prom Saturday night. He decided to ask his long-time friend Rachel Brittan.
His prom-posal was a bright yellow card that simply said, "Will you please help me get out of the warden's jail for one night and allow me to escort you to the prom."
Rachel, a former miss North Carolina contestant, said yes.
"Just the fact that he would want to make me a part of that night, it just means the world to me and it's truly a blessing," said Brittan.
Rachel said she and Victor have been friends since the sixth grade. They went to the same church and have many of the same friends. The prom she said will be like a reunion.
"So we will definitely have some surprises through the night and some dance moves to keep us excited," said Brittan.
The couple will take a limo to the dance for a night they will never forget.
