RALEIGH (WTVD) -- As authorities in South Carolina continue to add up the human toll of the disastrous flooding there, the impact on animals is now coming into focus right here in the Triangle.

Update: The Wake County SPCA tells ABC11 that the delivery of two litters of puppies and several adult dogs at their facility in Raleigh has been delayed until Friday.

An untold number of animals have been displaced by the high water.

Some went missing or were abandoned during the storm and in some cases owners who have lost their homes may no longer be able to care for the animals.

The story of the animals being brought to Wake County is even more poignant.

Darci VanderSlik, the communications director for the Wake SPCA explained, "These are not dogs that were displaced from their home. These are dogs that were currently in a shelter that were homeless to begin with. And their shelter got destroyed. And so it's sort of like they are homeless again."

"So that's, you know, when this situation occurs we're happy to be able to step up and help," she added.

She said the Humane Society of the United States is coordinating the rescue efforts in South Carolina and the SPCA is partnering with that group.

VanderSlik says anyone who can't adopt one of the dogs can still help by donating money for their cause.

She says it's possible that many of them have been traumatized by all they have been through and likely will need expensive special care before they are adopted.
