FAYETTEVILLE (WTVD) -- Fayetteville State University has parted ways with head football coach Lawrence Kershaw, the school announced Monday.

Fayetteville State finished the 2015 season with a 4-6 record, punctuated by a 24-22 loss to Winston-Salem State on Nov. 7 in the season finale. In three seasons, the Broncos finished 15-15 under Kershaw.

"We are tremendously grateful for the hard work, dedication and contributions Coach Kershaw and his staff have made to both Fayetteville State University and our community. However, after conducting a detailed evaluation of our football program, I have made a decision to move in a different direction," Director of Athletics Anthony Bennett said in a statement.

Defensive coordinator David Bowser has been named interim head coach. Bowser has been a member of the FSU staff since 2000. In his time with the Broncos, Bowser has also served as running backs coach and recruiting coordinator.

"Our goal will be to move expeditiously in our search for an individual to lead our football program," Bennett said. "We believe that we will be able to attract strong candidates who have the skills and desire to lead our program to greater heights."
