LINDEN, N.J. -- Police are investigating an incident at a high school football game in New Jersey in which one player appears to strike another with his own helmet.

It happened in the second quarter of a game between Linden High School and Immaculata High School at Linden's Tiger Stadium last Friday night.

Tempers flared and flags were quickly thrown during the game when a dead play at the line of scrimmage led to a vicious unprotected blow to the head captured on camera.

You can watch as #73 and #1 get tangled up during the play with the Immaculata lineman getting tossed to the ground.

His helmet was then ripped off by the Linden player who swings and strikes him across the head.

Although the Linden player was flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct, he wasn't ejected from the game and now Immaculata school officials are demanding he receive the maximum punishment.

Meanwhile the helmet hurl sent #73 to a nearby hospital where he received 10 stitches.

Linden Public Schools superintendent Danny Robertozzi released the following statement regarding the incident:

"The Linden Public School District is aware of the incident that occurred during the Varsity Football Game vs. Immaculata on Friday, September 11, 2015. An investigation by administration is taking place and disciplinary consequences will be issued accordingly. Due to student confidentiality, no further comments will be released.

"The Linden Public School Disctrict is taking this very seriously and by no means is this incident a reflection of our school community or athletic teams."

Immaculata athletics director Tom Gambino reported receiving an apology letter from Linden school officials.

Linden police say the incident is under investigation by the Juvenile Bureau to determine if charges will be filed.
