RALEIGH -- The N.C. Department of Transportation has scheduled its annual scan of the Bonner Bridge deck, which is expected to hold up traffic briefly.

A statement from NCDOT says work will begin Thursday at 9 a.m. and last no longer than 30 minutes, weather permitting.

The Bonner Bridge has a series of GPS data points. During the scan, a truck with a GPS reader will slowly travel along the bridge, gathering location data of each of the data points. This data will then be compared to previous data gathered last year to determine if there has been any abnormal movement.

In addition to annual deck scans, NCDOT also performs monthly underwater sonar scans to monitor the bridge's support structure for signs of scour, where sand has drifted away from the pilings.
