Wake County to impose fines on drivers caught illegally passing school buses
Wake County Commissioners on Tuesday moved to impose new penalties on drivers who illegally pass school buses.

RALEIGH, North Carolina (WTVD) -- Wake County Commissioners on Tuesday moved to impose new penalties on drivers who illegally pass school buses.

The action follows a new state law that allows counties to fine the owners of those vehicles even if they're caught on camera.

Board chairman Sig Hutchinson said he hopes to work collaboratively with WCPSS staff on the new ordinance.

The law authorizes counties to adopt the ordinance with civil penalties of $400 for the first offense, $750 for the second offense and $1,000 for a subsequent offense.
