Work wrapping up on first phase of I-40/I-440 construction
The DOT is about to hit a milestone in the ongoing I-40/440 construction project in Raleigh.

RALEIGH (WTVD) -- The DOT is about to hit a milestone in the ongoing I-40/440 construction project in Raleigh.

The section affected is the I-40/440 split westbound that runs up to Poole Road.

Road crews will be putting the finishing touches on a top layer of asphalt. Once that's complete, a third lane on I-40 will speed things up a bit.

Also on the horizon, crews expect to wrap up paving work eastbound on the I-40 split to U.S. Highway 64/264. That, however, won't happen until next month.

Drivers have been dealing the project since late 2013.

The deadline for the entire project is expected sometime in 2016.
