RDU packed for holiday travel
The airport was packed for post-holiday travel

RALEIGH-DURHAM INTERNATIONAL (WTVD) -- Crowds are building once again at Raleigh-Durham International Airport as people head back home after visiting loved ones for the holiday.

At the height of the hustle, last week before Christmas Eve, RDU estimated seeing more than 29,000 people come and go through the airport. Now those number are steadily coming back as people start to travel again on Sunday and into Monday.

Travelers in RDU Airport

Doug Lyons and his wife stood in the long check-in line Sunday afternoon at RDU as they prepared to say goodbye to their son who was home visiting from New York. Despite being sad to see him go they made sure to get him to the airport extra early.

"We kind of figured it would be a little crowded," said Lyons.

If you or a loved one are preparing to hit the skies Sunday or in the coming days, RDU has some tips they hope will make your trip a little smoother.

They suggest checking your flight status before even coming to the airport, so you don't have any surprises at the ticket counter.

They also remind you to know what's in your bag, especially your carry on bag so the security process moves along without interruption.

Airport representatives have also been using social media and tweeting reminders to travelers to arrive at least two hours before take off and they've been updating people on the parking situation. At last check, all parking lots are open.
