DURHAM (WTVD) -- Former UNC basketball player Melvin Scott is facing charges of second-degree rape.

Scott, 32, was arrested in Durham on Friday and jailed under $500,000 bond. His bond was modified late Monday to $200,000 secured.

According to police, the alleged incident happened Aug. 20 and involved a female acquaintance who was "mentally incapacitated and physically helpless."

Scott played four years at Carolina and was a member of the 2005 national championship team.

Scott was employed at Voyager Academy in Durham as a high school physical education teacher and assistant coach for the high school basketball team until mid-September when the charter school was notified of the police investigation.

"Within 12 hours of learning he was a suspect in a potential crime, he was put on paid leave," said Julie Lucas, Managing Director at Voyager Academy.

Lucas told ABC11 that Scott has not been on campus since he was put on leave and his position at the school was eliminated Nov. 14 as part of unrelated staff changes.

Scott was previously arrested while a freshman at UNC in 2002 for assault on a female at a Chapel Hill nightclub. He was also arrested in Chapel Hill in 2010 and charged with being drunk and disruptive, trespassing, and pushing a police officer in the chest.
