No threat found after suspicious UNC online posting
CHAPEL HILL (WTVD) -- The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill says there is no threat after a suspicious posting was made online.
UNC officials say the post was made on the social media site Yik Yak and that they are still investigating.
The university sent out an Alert Carolina Tuesday morning notifying the campus that UNC Public Safety was made aware of an anonymous online posting which could be considered a threat against the campus community.
"UNC Public Safety is taking the posting seriously and taking appropriate measures to keep the campus safe," the alert said. "The posting did not indicate any specific campus location or means of violence-it only warned against being on campus at 9:49 a.m. today."
"Based on the current assessment, UNC remains open and classes will proceed as usual at the faculty member's discretion," the alert went on to say. "We recognize the concern that our students and community have, and we are asking our faculty to show flexibility for student concerns given this unique situation."
UNC said they issued the notification out of caution and are reminding the campus community to be observant and aware.
Chapel Hill police are not assisting in the investigation.
"We are aware of it but they (UNC Police) are investigating," said Josh Mecimore with Chapel Hill Police.
"DPS is monitoring through increased patrols, and we're investigating the threat, and we're encouraging heightened vigilance by campus community -- asking anyone seeing suspicious activity to call 911," UNC Public Safety Spokesman Randy Young told ABC11.
