Encounters with wildlife become more frequent as spring approaches
The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission is offering guidance for encounters with wildlife, which become more common as animals get more active this time of year.

One week from the start of spring, the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission is offering guidance as encounters with wild animals become more frequent this time of year.

That's because many animals become more active in the spring.

Black bears emerge from their dens in spring and become more active. Securing garbage and taking down bird feeders can help people avoid conflicts with bears.

Snakes become more active as the weather warms. You're advised not to kill snakes because they help control rodent, slug and insect populations. If you come across a snake, remain calm and give it plenty of room to move along.

Coyote sightings spike in the spring during the breeding season and peak in May as they search for food to support their pups. Though they rarely attack people, they are opportunistic hunters, so smaller pets should be closely supervised when outdoors to avoid being preyed upon.
