Wake school board approves plan to reassign thousands of students

CARY (WTVD) -- The Wake County School Board approved on Tuesday its latest student assignment plan for the next school year.

Board members said they estimate no more than 2,369 current students would be affected by changes because of overcrowding.

Of those, more than 2,100 are being assigned to one of three new schools opening next fall: Hortons Creek Elementary School, Rogers Lane Elementary School and River Bend Middle School.

About 1,100 students will be eligible to seek a grandfathering exemption.

The school system said the plan was necessary because "We are the largest school district in the state and continuing to grow. High growth creates overcrowded schools, which is detrimental to students' ability to learn and the overall function of the school."
