A cold start to Sunday morning

RALEIGH (WTVD) -- Most of the viewing area was under a Freeze Warning until 9 a.m. Sunday, so you'll need that winter coat for weekend activities!

ABC11 Meteorologist Steve Stewart said Saturday was the coldest night so far this season with an end to the growing season likely.

A hard freeze overnight dropped temperatures to the upper 20s. Sunday turns into a nice day with a sunny sky and the afternoon will not be as cool with highs in the lower 60s.

The low at Raleigh-Durham International Airport was a frosty 24 degrees, which is just one degree shy of the record low.

Stewart explains it has been very dry over the last month. Since Oct. 10 there has only be seven percent of normal rainfall with temperatures 2.4 degrees above normal.

But, some much-needed rain seems likely on Monday. An upper-level low moves in from the west-southwest and taps Atlantic moisture to bring a period of rain or showers to the area.

One rain event will not cure the month-long drought but it will certainly be welcome. But this is a one-time event and Tuesday turns partly sunny and dry once again.
