12-year-old boy shot, killed in Lenoir County
A 12-year-old boy was killed Thursday evening in Lenoir County in what authorities said appeared to be an accidental shooting.

KINSTON, N.C. (WTVD) -- A 12-year-old boy was killed Thursday evening in Lenoir County in what authorities said appeared to be an accidental shooting.

The Lenoir County Sheriff's Office said the shooting happened just after 7 p.m. in the 2600 block of Dean Drive.

The sheriff's office said it appeared a sibling with a .22-caliber rifle accidentally shot the victim, who was a student at Contentnea-Savannah School.

Lenoir County Public Schools will have grief counselors available at the school Friday.

The names of the children involved were not released.

The Lenoir County Department of Social Services is assisting as the sheriff's office continues to investigate. The District Attorney's office will also provide guidance as authorities determine whether any charges will be filed.
