DURHAM, N.C. (WTVD) -- Durham police are investigating after one teenage boy was fatally shot and another wounded Wednesday in the 1200 block of Riddle Road near Fayetteville Street. That's near the American Tobacco Trail and Hillside High School.

Police are asking residents to avoid this area while the investigation is ongoing. Police said the case remains an active investigation into the evening.

It happened shortly after 1 p.m. One shooting victim was taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries. He died at the hospital, police said Wednesday evening. The other was also taken for treatment and suffered what police described as non-life-threatening injuries.

DPD said it has not confirmed whether or not the victims were students.

Hillside High and W.G. Pearson Magnet Elementary School were on "secure status," not lockdowns. This means students can walk around inside the building, but no one can come in. The schools lifted the secure-status measure shortly before 3 p.m.

Police talked to witnesses including a 15-year-old, whose mother stood nearby waiting to get her son.

"It's hard to see your son standing out here and all these police and ambulances, fire trucks and stuff hearing that a child or someone got shot," the mother said. "It's heartbreaking."

Police said the shooting was in the woods near the Tobacco Trail and K9 units were looking for evidence.

Riddle Road was closed from Fayetteville Street to Alfred Street as police investigated. It remained an active scene with a mobile command unit on-site into the late afternoon, and the road was not expected to reopen for several more hours.

That closure prevented staffers at Southpoint Family Dentistry from leaving but they were able to leave an hour later. Staffers said they see high school students frequently walking in the area.

"It just really makes my heart very sad," said dentist Kisha Flood. "I'm really emotional about it and that's why I'm trying to leave and get my thoughts together because it's just heartbreaking for anyone to go through this in the community as nice as Durham."
