Suspect charged after Durham shooting leaves 1 dead, 3 injured
Durham officers responded to Duke University Hospital and found four people shot, one of whom later died.

DURHAM, N.C. (WTVD) -- A second suspect has been charged in a shooting that left a man dead and three others injured in Durham.

The shooting happened Wednesday night shortly before 10 p.m., near South LaSalle Street and the Durham Freeway at the Duke Manor apartments.

Durham police say they responded to Duke University Hospital about a walk-in patient with a gunshot wound.

When officers arrived, they said there were three men and a woman suffering from gunshot wounds.

Police say one man died shortly after arriving at the hospital. On Thursday afternoon, DPD identified him as Nelson Mendez-Vasquez, 27 of Durham.

Yeltsin Boris Cinto Orozco, 29, of Durham was arrested and charged with first-degree murder. He was also charged with three counts of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious bodily injury and one count of discharge weapon into occupied property serious bodily injury

On Friday, police said William Antonio Sanchez-Vasquez, 42, had been arrested and charged with first-degree murder, three counts of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious bodily injury and one count of discharge weapon into occupied property serious bodily injury

Both suspects are being held at the Durham County Jail with no bond.

The woman suffered from life-threatening injuries and the two other men sustained what were described as non-life-threatening injuries.

Police say the shooting appears to be an isolated incident. The case remains under investigation and more charges are pending, DPD said.

DPD has not released information about what led up to the shooting and what the relationship was between the victims and Orozco.

During a city work session on Thursday, Durham Mayor Leo Williams said he received a jarring phone call Wednesday night in the wake of the shooting, something that's weighing heavily on him

"Without going into detail. This particular time I received the frantic phone call directly...from someone saying, 'Hey, there's this - what do we do?'...' There's gonna be retaliation.''' Williams said. "I was just really upset and I appreciate... Chief Andrew's being able to just...take that information and react."

He also vows to continue to work with young people in the Bull City to prevent further violence.

"And so that's where my energy will go and that's what I plan to focus on because this is happening on a daily basis right before us. And I just want to make sure that that's always top of mind," Williams said.
