Library book returned more than 78 years late

ATTLEBORO, Massachusetts -- A library book more than 78 years overdue is finally back home.

The copy of T.S. Arthur's "The Young Lady at Home" was due back on Nov. 21, 1938. A man cleaning his friend's basement recently found the book -- along with its due date card -- and decided to take it back to the Attleboro Public Library.

Librarians were kind enough to drop the late fee, which likely would have topped $2,800 per the library's 10-cents per day late fine.

"People did comment on it (Facebook post), saying things like, 'Oh it makes me feel less guilty about my overdue books,'" Amy Rhilinger, the library's deputy director, told WPRI-TV.
