Mother dies, son injured after they are hit by car in Johnston County

JOHNSTON COUNTY, NC (WTVD) -- A mother and son were hit by a car in Johnston County on Thursday morning. Both were trapped underneath the car before they were rushed to WakeMed with serious injuries.

Maria Aguilar Suarez, 34, of Benson, died at WakeMed from her injuries. Her 8-year-old son, Juan Almanza, is listed in fair condition.

The North Carolina State Highway Patrol said the pair was struck just before 8:30 a.m. on Barberry Drive.

The mother and son were standing in the street when a blue Kia, driven by Ma Del Rosario Perez-Valdovinos, 49, of Benson, ran into them.

The two were trapped beneath the car. They were extracted and rushed to WakeMed.

Troopers said charges are pending against the driver.
